First Visit

Dr. Steed's goal during the initial appointment is to understand the unique situation of each patient and to provide a correct diagnosis with appropriate non-surgical treatment plan options.  Her goals for TMJ patients are to reduce or eliminate pain, improve the facial and TMJ function and to provide long term stabilization.  The initial consultation usually lasts 2 – 2 1/2 hours to provide the necessary diagnosis and treatment plan.  Besides a complete history and comprehensive examination of the head, neck and face;  x-rays (including TMJ x-rays), TM Joint Vibration Analysis, and Psychometric Analysis are provided to justify the presence of each patient's pain.  The Joint Vibration Analysis allows Dr. Steed to actually see the joint vibrations, created by popping, clicking, and the sounds made by the presence of arthritis.  The Psychometric Analysis ( the TMJ Scale) is an American Dental Association approved test which discerns TMJ pain from other facial pain not related to TMD.  It also provides an understanding of stress levels and other psychological factors.

The Treatment Plan Presentation will consist of a customized plan detailing diagnosis, non-surgical treatment options, and treatment fee.
